The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved a new top-level domain (TLD), .xxx domain.

It doesn’t take an internet maestro to figure out what sites with URLs ending in .xxx will contain. Yes, it will be sexually oriented adult entertainment content which is verified to be neither fraudulent nor illegal.

Initially, a lot of people were not too happy upon hearing the news that this domain would soon be coming, including the porn site owners. A group of adult web site owners that are part of adult entertainment trade group named Free Speech Coalition joined conservatives in opposition to the new domain.

The group worried that governments would try to restrict adult web sites to .xxx and then censor the domain. But as it turns out, porn site owners won’t have to relinquish their .com or other URLs, and .xxx domains won’t be mandatory for sites with adult content.

Now, around 230,000 .xxx domain names have already been registered through the ICM Registry.

In addition to promising consumers of Internet porn safety from online fraud (including e-mail spoofing, phishing and spam) and child pornography, ICM is also telling webmasters they will see more traffic and higher profits with the new domain, which it says will become a trusted brand for porn aficionados.
