We always stand in the shoes of website designer/developer, so when we visit our own website and ask ourselves “why am I here?” we always have thousands of reasons. But, how about your visitors? They wouldn’t be there just to check for bugs, or finding out what to do to make the design looks cleaner. So give them some reasons to stay. Obviously, user will get into one website at the first place because they find useful information inside it. Power of content plays an important role in this game. When we decide who would our target visitors be, we should already know everything that matters to them. That way, we know what kind of information we should fill up our website with. We give them good content, they come, and now make them stay longer. Users will likely try to dig for more. Provide links to related content on every page, let them explore inside our website. Also it’s a good idea to give them more than text content. We can always use flash or video streaming to give user more experience.
Yes we always have to provide a way for user to get back to home page. Every sub pages should be just one click away from going back home. But, don’t make them must go to home before they could go somewhere else. So always provide menu on top or left side of sub pages in your every web design. Don’t put navigation links only at the bottom of the page. Navigation link is what user always looking for. Putting them at the bottom make people must scroll down before reaching them. Minus point for web usability. But it doesn’t mean we can’t put navigation link on the bottom. If we have long pages, it’s better to put menus both on bottom and top of the page. Bottom navigation link is useful for long pages. After they read the whole page, they don’t have to scroll all the way up to find the menu.
Fast page load time is a part of good web usability. People always love high speed websites. Not only that, Google also have announced that they will also put Page Load Time in their page ranking system. This could do very much for SEO. Let’s get your site run faster. Graphic image is inseparable with web design, but image usage must be minimized effectively to get a fast load time. The fewer the image, the faster load time you get. But if you still have to use plenty of images, make sure the images are optimized all the way. Keep the file size small. Choose less color from the color palette. Use JPEG or GIF format, they’re best for web. Be careful on animated GIFs. They take time to completely load, and sometimes can be irritating for user to wait it. Same thing go to flash files. Flash can be entertaining but it obviously takes time. Better to use HTML in most of your design. HTML can be entertaining too if you use it creatively. Just go crazy experimenting on tables and CSS style. And the last thing is, always test the load time. Stand in the users position. Be [...]

Every time you turn some text into hyperlink, always give them a link title. Link title is just like image title or any other file title. It should be clear information about where the link will direct user. First, this link titles not only function as web usability enhancer. It would tell user where they’re about to go if they click the hyperlink. Page title should appear on mouse over. Just like this one. See, that page title will explain about the hyperlink without having it clicked. Not only useful for user, link title can enhance your SEO. But what important is to give your link a relevant name. Means the title must be related to the destination’s page content. The best option is to name the hyperlink with the same name as destination page title. That moves can’t go wrong as long as your page title is also relevant with the content below it. If your page title is irrelevant with the destination page, search engine bot will not count it.
It’s a good thing to give user several ways to get to same point. Especially links to pages that you want people to visit, or pages that people are likely to look for. For example, you have one link to your “Our Product” page at the head navigation bar, and you have another link in the footer, and one other as a banner at the side of the page. Same thing goes to search box. You can put your search box at the top corner of the page and put another one at the bottom. Just like what Google do. The point is we help user to go where they want to be in the quickest way possible. Most users are impatience. They will go away if they don’t find what they’re looking for after three clicks.
Nobody likes pop up ads. Everybody sees it as junk that appears without being requested. We always know that when we browse a website as a user. We often forget that when we stand as the one designing a web. Some advertiser may pay good price to put pop up ad in our site. Or maybe worse, we give our brand/company site a pop up ad of our specific product or related brand. Pop Up ad annoys visitor. Giving user pop up ad is like serving them something they hate, making them uncomfortable. They’ll leave our site with bad experience. We must respect all visitors. If they want to see something, they’ll browse. Don’t need to oversell anything. Better keep the ad in the form of banner. Share and Enjoy: Tweet This Post Related posts:Ad Banner: Animation Rules!
