Facebook’s virtual currency, Facebook Credits is currently used in around 350 applications created by 150 developers, including 22 of FB’s top 25 games. Up until recently, more than 70% of all virtual goods on Facebook are bought and sold using the Credits.

Facebook Credits’ reign over its onsite games has barely begun, though, as the credits will become mandatory on July 1, 2011. Between now and July, Facebook will be working with social game developers to ensure that every single payment on Facebook gaming platform is using Credits.

Making Facebook Credits the only currency allowed for Facebook apps is surely a good move to increase the social network company’s revenue (the company takes 30% cut of all Facebook Credits revenues), but it could also bring negative consequences. This standardization will be interpreted by some as an approach to monetize the company’s grip on social gaming scene.

Maybe Zuckerberg isn’t happy with controlling all the web, so now he wants to control the monetary system also. Or maybe he’s planning to overtake PayPal in the future?
