Hi all. This tutorial is about making a photograph looks more like Chinese comic. Soft looking and all. I always get jealous when I see their artwork, and I am still hoping that I could draw and color like them. Anyway, let’s start practicing.
Step01:
This is the image I used. It’s looking modern and things. You know..

Step02:
duplicate the background image (ctrl+j), then select the new layer, desaturate them (image>adjustment>desaturate).

This is how it should look now.

Step03:
duplicate layer 1 again by pressing ctrl+j, then invert it by pressing ctrl+i.

this is how it should look like now, it’s kinda scary…

Step04:
Anyway, set the inverted image into color dodge mode.

And then go to filter>other>minimum, set the radius into 1 pixel.

Looks pretty good now. But still black and white.

Step05:
double click on layer 1 copy to open the layer style.

Then alt+left click the small triangle in underlaying layer, then it will change into a split triangle. Set it like the image showed.

It should look like this right now. Still black and white.

Step06:
Merge layer 1 and layer 1 copy by pressing ctrl+e while activating both layers. Then duplicate it again by pressing ctrl+j.

Activate the newest layer, then go to filter>blur>Gaussian blur and set the radius into 4 pixels. And then set the layer mode into linear burn.

This is how it should look like now. And, it still black and white.

Step07:
Duplicate layer background by pressing ctrl+j, and put the newest layer into the top and set the layer mode into color.

Now, it has color.

Step08:
then make a layer mask on it fill it with black,

activate the image (not the mask), go to image>adjustment>curves

and set it like the image.

Step09:
select the mask and grab your brush tool,

set it like the image,
![]()
set the primary color into white then start brushing which area you want to color and so on…
![]()
this is how’s mine look..

Step10:
Next make a new layer, fill it with a #ffecd1 color. Then set the layer mode into softlight and drop the opacity into 40%. Then you’re done…. If you want to make the lips a bit cherrier, than just use the brush in the background copy image layer… .

Now this is how mine’s look…
