  • Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 2:41 am Chinese Painting

Hi all. This tutorial is about making a photograph looks more like Chinese comic. Soft looking and all. I always get jealous when I see their artwork, and I am still hoping that I could draw and color like them. Anyway, let’s start practicing.

    Step01:
This is the image I used. It’s looking modern and things. You know..

    1

    Step02:
duplicate the background image (ctrl+j), then select the new layer, desaturate them (image>adjustment>desaturate).

    2a

This is how it should look now.

    2b

    Step03:
duplicate layer 1 again by pressing ctrl+j, then invert it by pressing ctrl+i.

    3b

this is how it should look like now, it’s kinda scary…

    3c

    Step04:
Anyway, set the inverted image into color dodge mode.

    4

And then go to filter>other>minimum, set the radius into 1 pixel.

    4b

Looks pretty good now. But still black and white.

    4c

    Step05:
double click on layer 1 copy to open the layer style.

    5

Then alt+left click the small triangle in underlaying layer, then it will change into a split triangle. Set it like the image showed.

    5b

It should look like this right now. Still black and white.

    5c

    Step06:
Merge layer 1 and layer 1 copy by pressing ctrl+e while activating both layers. Then duplicate it again by pressing ctrl+j.

    6

Activate the newest layer, then go to filter>blur>Gaussian blur and set the radius into 4 pixels. And then set the layer mode into linear burn.

    6b

This is how it should look like now. And, it still black and white.

    6c

    Step07:
Duplicate layer background by pressing ctrl+j, and put the newest layer into the top and set the layer mode into color.

    7

    Now, it has color.

    7b

    Step08:
then make a layer mask on it fill it with black,

    8

activate the image (not the mask), go to image>adjustment>curves

    8b

and set it like the image.

    8c

    Step09:
select the mask and grab your brush tool,

    9

    set it like the image,

    9b

set the primary color into white then start brushing which area you want to color and so on…

    9c

    this is how’s mine look..

    9d

    Step10:
Next make a new layer, fill it with a #ffecd1 color. Then set the layer mode into softlight and drop the opacity into 40%. Then you’re done…. If you want to make the lips a bit cherrier, than just use the brush in the background copy image layer… .

    10

Now this is how mine’s look…

  • Monday, November 2, 2009 at 11:16 pm From BW to Color

I know, you know how to desaturate an image, just press shift+ctrl+u. But if you want to color them, there is a lot more steps, and here’s the steps.

    Step01:
First this is my image. I take this image from http://angelinajolie.celebden.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/Angelina%20Jolie%20hair%20style.jpg

    1

Anyway, the first thing you have to do is double click the background layer and activate it.

    1b

Just so it was a little cleaner, make a group of it.

    1c

    Step02:
    Then using pentool,

    2

try to draw path around her. Don’t worry about her hair yet.

    2b

    Step03:
go to path box, and right click>make selection.

    3

    Set the feather into 0.5pixel

    3b

    3c

    Step04:
make a mask on the layer.

    4

This is how it should look like now.

    4b

    Step05:
disable layer mask with shift+left click on the mask.

    5

And then go to channel and duplicate the red channel.

    5b

    Step06:
enable the mask again then go back to the red copy channel, and go to image>adjustment>curves.

    6

Try to contrast the hair as much as you could

    6b

    Step07:
Press ctrl+i on the red copy channel, so it would invert. Then ctrl+ click on it, then go to the mask layer and using brush tool set the primary color into white and brush all the selection. This is how it should look right now. Then just delete the red copy channel.

    7

    Step08:
then click the icon for create new fill or adjustment layer>gradient map .

    8

A Gradient Map uses the grayscale data from the image to apply the gradient that you create. The left side of the gradient represents the darkest parts of the image. The right side represents the light parts.

    8b

Because we need too represent a woman skin just guess about it. Don’t forget to set the layer mode into color.

    8c

    8d

    Step09:
Then let’s make her lips look a bit real, use pen tool and draw the shape of her lips, make selection with 0.5pixel feather. Then click the icon for create new fill or adjustment layer>curve.

    9

Tweak it a bit so the lips look a bit darker. Then click again the icon for create new fill or adjustment layer>gradient map.  Click alt+ctrl+g , then set the layer mode into color.

    9b

After this is done, set the color so it would look like a lips. The color I left it to you to imagine. This is how mine’s look.

    9c

    Step10:
To make a skin variation in the face, just make a loose selection around the face and click the icon for create new fill or adjustment layer>curve.

    10

Tweak it a bit, so it was up to your satisfaction and don’t forget to change the layer mode into color.

    10b

    Step11:
Now, look at the hair, it still didn’t look real

    11

so select it, and go to create new fill or adjustment layer>gradient map. Set the hair into your liking, if there is some bleeding just remedy them using brush or eraser in the mask layer.

    11b

Don’t forget to change the layer mode into color.

    11c

    Step12:
then just add some background. And you are done with this tutorial. This is how mine’s look.

  • Monday, November 2, 2009 at 6:18 am Live Trace in Illustrator

Hi all. There is this really cool thing in illustrator called live trace. From this we could built a bacteria kinda living thing from nothing. So here we go.

    Step01:
Make a perfect rectangle using a rectangle tool (M), and use a radial gradient to fill it, choose the color from the swatches, I used the  R=0 G=104 b =55 and for the center I used R=140 G=198 B=63.

    1

    Step02:
Make a new layer on top of it, use any color you want.

    2

go to effect>texture>stained glass. Change the  cell size into 35 border thickness into 5 and light intensity into 10.

    2b

    Step03:
This is how it should look like now.

    3

go to object>expand appearance, then go to object> live trace>make and expand. Ungroup it.And this is the result.

    3b

    Step04:
Select the black area, recolor it into white.

    4

Then select the rest of the other area (not the one you just recolor) and delete it.

    4b

This is how it should look like now.

    4c

    Step05:
Go to pucker tool in the tool box, click it twice,

    5

and set the width and height into 40pt angle into 60 and the intensity into 30%.

    5b

Activate the white area, and start puckering

    5c

    Step06:
Now go to transparency box (Shift+ctrl+F10), and change it into overlay mode, and the opacity into 75%.

    6

This is how it should look like

    6b

    Step07:
Now go to appearance box (shift+F6), click the layer fill then go to effect>stylize>outer glow.

    7

Change the setting into screen mode, 80% opacity and blur into 3 pixel.

    7b

This is how it should look like now.

    7c

    Step08:
To make another variety, let’s reflect it (right click>transform>reflect)

    8

    Step09:
Now, start using the pucker tool again in some area.

    9

And then go into transparency box and change it into overlay mode and 75% opacity.

    9b

    Step10:
    This is the result.

  • Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 10:37 pm Bridge Illustration in Illustrator CS4

Hello, let’s make a bridge in illustrator CS4. It was easy and basically just need a lot copy and paste though. So, let’s get started.

    Step 01:
Make a rectangle path using marquee tool (M)

    1

    Step 02:
then using ellipse tool (L) make a big circle in the middle of it, then reposition it, until it looks like the image.

    2

    Step 03:
Activate both of them, select pathfinder (window>pathfinder or shift+ctrl+F9), click minus front.

    3

    Step 04:
copy and paste in front (ctrl+c then ctrl+f) the shape, then resize and recolor it, until it look like the image.

    4

    Step 05:
select direct selection tool (A) than click the smaller path then tweak the point, until it look like there are some dimension in it.

    5

    Step 06:
Then right click>arrange > send to back (ctrl+shift+[). Now the basic of the bridge is done.

    6

    Step 07:
next one is the stone, select the rounded rectangle tool...

    7

just guess the size so it would fit your bridge. Remember don’t use stroke.

    7a

    Step 08:
now activate the stone and select effect>stylize>drop shadow. Make the opacity 70%, x offset and y offset both into 2, don’t forget to activate preview to see does it look good enough.

    8

    Step 09:
Now, to the fun stuff, rearrange the stone in the bridge anyway you like…. Don’t forget to copy and paste the stone to multiply it.

    9

    Step 10:
now make another stone to make another variety, just do the same thing with the previous stone. Remember, if you have difficulties when you arrange the stone, press ctrl+2 or object>lock>selection.

    10

    Step 11:
this is my bridge now, still there is an overload stone everywhere.

    11

So activate the base bridge, copy and paste in front (ctrl+c then ctrl+f) the shape, then bring it forward by right click >send to forward (ctrl+shift+])

    11b

    Step 12:
activate the base bridge and the second stone, the right click>mask.

    12

    12b

    Step 13:
then click the masked stone and then right click> send backward (shift+[) until it look like this.

    13

If you want to make it more realistic then select the first stone in the circle, copy paste, resize and recolor it.

    13b

    Step 14:
send the stone into the back than select blend tool, click on the icon twice …

    14

and in the spacing choose specified steps and 20 in the box beside it. Then select the first and the resized one to start blending it.

    14b

    Step 15:
if you don’t want drop shadow in the back one, go into isolation mode in the back until in the appearance box  (shift+F6) there is drop shadow effect, and you can delete it

    15

    Step 16:
Now you must have noticed, the first stone must be a little out of the line, then mask it again. If you use lock object, you must unlock it first with alt+ctrl+2. This is the final result.
