Monday, November 30, 2009 at 2:59 am Quick Graphic Tips for Web Design
Graphic often plays important role in web design. People may not like reading on web, but they always interested in seeing graphic. This is why web designer should take more attention in web graphic.
Here are some quick tips (obvious tips for some of us) about handling web graphic.

First, always use graphic with low file size. We all know this is important to optimize the page load time. People hates big image because it consume their bandwidth and waste their time. Compress bigger files make it as small as you can get.
Give your graphic an alt text. Not only it gives detailed information to user, if the alt text contains specific keyword, it will also help your SEO. If the graphic contains link, make sure the link is correct.
Always use browser-safe color for your graphic. We never know how the browser will render it. So don’t be too experimental on this. Just play it safe to make sure the graphic shows correctly.
We can use graphic element to break long text area. People will get tired reading too long so why don’t we put some graphic image in between. It will also help the web design layout to look less crowded.

Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 11:35 pm Users are Getting Intolerant
Web designs standard are getting better from time to time, but web user also become more ruthless, intolerant, and selfish. They often ignore our fancy web design and just visit our site to get information they need, and go away.
Good web design is important. But good web design doesn’t mean fancy and flashy looks. Today’s good web design must have good web usability. People go to a site and get quickly to the point, they have very little patience. They want everything as quickly as possible.
Long page load time could drive them away, so stop adding widget and application if they don’t do any significant support to web usability.
Users nowadays are more likely to enter a site via deep link not via homepage. They click on a link somewhere (maybe search engine) and the link direct them to certain subpage inside our web. That’s why deep linking is important when we do some offsite SEO.
Only 25 people out of 100 travel a site via homepage. The rest go to certain page from search engine. This is why we said search engine rules the internet world, and SEO still an excellent method to gain traffic.

Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 5:36 am Give Hyperlinks a Name
Every time you turn some text into hyperlink, always give them a link title. Link title is just like image title or any other file title. It should be clear information about where the link will direct user.
First, this link titles not only function as web usability enhancer. It would tell user where they’re about to go if they click the hyperlink. Page title should appear on mouse over. Just like this one. See, that page title will explain about the hyperlink without having it clicked.

Not only useful for user, link title can enhance your SEO. But what important is to give your link a relevant name. Means the title must be related to the destination’s page content. The best option is to name the hyperlink with the same name as destination page title. That moves can’t go wrong as long as your page title is also relevant with the content below it.
If your page title is irrelevant with the destination page, search engine bot will not count it.

Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 2:50 am Web Usability: Minimize Clicking
We all know people should find what they want as quickly as possible when visiting our site. That’s why when we design a web; we must provide a good structure that allows people to find useful information in just a few clicks away.
This is a web usability matter. People will likely go away if they don’t find what they’re looking for after three clicks. Put as few clicks as possible between your information and user.

The simplest one: What users see if they click on you URL? If it’s just useless splash welcome page that does nothing, get rid of it. We should directly give them the homepage and all the main navigation menu from the beginning.
People don’t like clicking too much, and they also hate scrolling too much. So keep your page short, especially for content article. Two scroll max. It also makes the web design looks better.

Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 12:16 am How Google Ranks Our Pages
We play our SEO on the Google field so it’s important for us to follow their game. We all know that Google doesn’t just pick random page for their top list. They have some ranking system that separates which site should go on top and which one stays on backyard.
Links play an important role. Make sure all links in our site works, both internal and external links. Continuously check for dead pages. Remove all dead links and change irrelevant links.
Then about the content; Keyword rich content is obviously important. But more important is good quality relevant content. Very keyword rich but pointless content will not make our page goes up. Remember that we build the site for people not for search engine.

Also keep the navigation as simple as possible. You must be doing this to comfort the users, but hey… this can also enhance your rank in the search result because Google crawler will also easily explore your site.
The latest ranking factor would be page load time. Google just announce that they will have this new ranking factor in 2010. So we better get rid of those heavy graphic and keep the web design simple.
