Friday, October 30, 2009 at 6:49 am It’s The Beginning of Wide Screen Age
What are you facing right now? If it’s not 1024 x 768 monitor screen, maybe you need to fast forward your life a little bit. Research by OneStat and TheCounter.com has shown that 75%-80% internet users use wide screen with the resolution of 1024 x 768 or larger.

This is a good thing for web designer, because people don’t like to scroll. They get into a page; they see what appear, and then go away to load another page. They might miss some information we want them to see. Large resolution allows us to put more into one view. We could use more extra 200 pixels than the previous screen resolution trend of 800 x 600.
But don’t get too excited. Use your wide space wisely. About column width; you’re designing on a wide screen doesn’t mean you should apply wider column width. Keep it comfortably readable with 55 characters per line. The same goes to column amount. If your two columns design seems good enough, avoid the temptation of adding one more columns.
The main thing is, keep it simple. Better to use the extra space to improve navigation. And one more thing, never ever excess the 1024 width. User hates horizontal scrolling even more than vertical scrolling.

Friday, October 30, 2009 at 4:51 am SEO: Mind the Visitors’ Need
So you’ve done a lot of content work to ease search engine robot crawling around your website. If that all takes your website to the top of the list, congratulations. You just got yourself a good SEO. But one thing, what can you gives to those massive people visiting your website?

If you’re writing the content just for the sake of search engine bot and not for the sake of your target visitor, then you’re so dead. Many people will come just to be disappointed for not getting any information they need. Bad experience for them, and they’ll never comeback.
What’s the point of getting on top if we can’t give the best. So whenever you’re doing some content writing, don’t just do it for the bot. Do it for the people.
Let them meet their need inside your website. Give relevant, in-depth, complete, interesting information. This way you can get people satisfied with your website and they might spread it so more people will come. Do your SEO but never forget what people’s need.

Friday, October 30, 2009 at 3:09 am Why Write Your Own Web Content

If… you can get a team of content management specialist doing it for you. Content work is not an easy task to do. You will need a lot of time doing this. You can’t say your work is done just after you finish writing an article. That’s just a draft, it’s not done yet. It’s still a work in progress.
After you have your first draft. Don’t publish it. First draft is never meant to be published. It’s always for proofread. Revise any grammar error found, and more important, replace some wording with the one much better you just had in mind.
Is it done yet? Not really, take a look at your draft once again. Does it give your SEO enough support? Does its length would match the layout design? Does its flow can be enjoyable for targeted visitor? While trying to answer all those questions you could probably finish doing much other stuff.
This is why you should outsource some web content writers. Professional content writers knows what they’re doing and they can do it fast. See all the questions in the previous paragraph, professional content writers always answer with “hell, yes!”
So why waste your time? Just leave your content writing to the expert.

Friday, October 30, 2009 at 1:50 am Opacity Mask in Illustrator CS4
Hello, this is the tutorial using opacity mask, like the title said. Using this mask, you could have a more complicated mask , and I think this is an awesome trick to learn. Let’s get it done then….
Step01:
Make box using rectangle tool(M), then go to window>swatch library>gradients>sky. Fill it without any stroke. And we just made our base color.
Step02:
Next, go to window>symbol>grime vector pack. Select symbol sprayer tool (shift+S) and then spray it once.
Step03:
Select the sprayed item, go to object>expand. Click ok.
And then recolor it into white. Drag it into the symbol box(shift+ctrl+F11).Name it anything you want.

Step04:
Now back to our base color. Go to transparency box (shift+ctrl+F10). Click the drop down icon, select make opacity mask. It should look like this now.
Step05:
Activate the black one, select symbol sprayer tool (shift+S), and choose the one we just made.
Spray it a couple of times. You could get a variation using other symbol tool.

Step06:
Then go to object>expand, then click break link in the group box.
Step07:
Select twirl tool in the tool box. Start twirl it, until you like the result. This is how mine’s look like.
I know it just a short tutorial but using this method and the radiance method I could get result like this.

Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 6:23 am Flash Does Improve Everything
Who doesn’t want a Flash in their site at this day. Flash is like the marker of modern web development. This absolutely can improve any website to a great extent. But… only if applied wisely. For example, mind the loading time. People will leave the Flash before they can enjoy it if it takes too much time to load.
There are many web element can be build based on Flash. The first and the most common use of Flash is animation. Turn simple part of your website into something more fun and enjoyable. Little boring things like menus, button, header, or other snippets can be replaced by exciting Flash animation. Flash animation can also be used to direct visitor eyes to particular part of your website.
Also don’t forget about Flash game. There are so much fun people can get from a really simple game. Unlike traditional computer game, people don’t need to work hard on installing the game before they can enjoy it. Here are some examples of Flash game.

Another use of Flash: audio/video player. More people willing to see more than just text and static picture. So give them some video to watch online. Before Flash exist, we just give them the link to download or stream the video file so they can run it on their own video player. But not today… We got Flash now, we can just stream the video and watch it directly from browser. Much more faster and easier.
That’s right, Flash does improve everything, but only if it’s built by the right hand.
